Kay Adams expressed surprise upon learning that former NFL linebacker and head coach Mike Singletary once coached Rob Mays in youth football. During a discussion on The Athletic Football Show, Mays shared his experience with Singletary’s “tough love” coaching style. “What are you talking about?” Adams asked, to which Mays replied, “He was my football coach for two years.” When Adams inquired if Singletary was the toughest boss Mays ever had, he acknowledged, “He was certainly one of them.”
Mays recounted a memorable story from eighth grade when Singletary participated in practice drills wearing full pads. Despite being around 45-50 years old at the time, Singletary impressed with his physical presence. Mays described him as a fun yet demanding coach.
Singletary is best known for his tenure as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers and more recently resigned from Trinity Christian Academy in December 2019 after an unsuccessful stint with a record of 1-21 over two seasons. Following his resignation, he shifted focus to motivational speaking and consulting, publishing materials and launching MKLS Productions.
His recent works include the book “Visualize Your Greatness: The Playbook for the Seven C’s of Success” and a spoken word project titled “Mama’s Prayer.” These endeavors reflect Singletary’s continued influence beyond his football career.
Mike Singletary enjoyed a successful NFL career, making 10 consecutive Pro Bowls and defending 51 passes over 12 seasons. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
