On the August 20 broadcast of Good Morning America, Michael Strahan stepped in to take over anchoring duties following a technical issue with Sam Champion’s microphone. The incident occurred live, requiring a quick switch by producers and resulting in Strahan filling the role intended for Champion.

During the episode, Strahan addressed viewers directly, explaining the reason for his sudden appearance as lead anchor. “Good morning to you, Pedro. Good morning to you, Brittany. You were gonna have Sam, but his mic didn’t work. So they switched it to me. He’s sitting right here. Hey, he couldn’t hear you guys. I’m gonna take over duties,” he said while seated next to Champion.

Champion also acknowledged the change on air: “Oh, good morning. America’s coming up next. I was told we were gonna have Sam Champion, but I’m very happy that we’ve got you, Michael.”

Strahan added further context and humor to the situation during the segment: “Plus, it is a happy day—come on, happy because I’m sitting next to my guy, Sam Champion here,” he remarked.

The program later posted a video clip of the exchange on Instagram with the caption: “Not even a mic malfunction can throw off our morning hangs with our friends at @abc7ny!”

Strahan is no stranger to live broadcast malfunctions or on-air challenges. He previously experienced technical issues during FOX NFL Sunday’s coverage of the NFC Championship Game in January 2025 when he and co-hosts Terry Bradshaw and Rob Gronkowski encountered sound problems during their discussion at Lincoln Financial Field.

There have been other notable instances where Strahan has handled unexpected moments smoothly on television. In 2015, he assisted guest Angie Harmon with a wardrobe malfunction on Live with Kelly and Michael.

Robin Roberts, a longtime Good Morning America anchor who has not appeared since late July, explained her absence via Instagram on August 19: “Good morning! With Glam Fam before we head out on assignment again,” she stated regarding her current schedule away from the anchor desk.

Roberts confirmed that she would not return until after Labor Day: “Not back in the studio until after Labor Day. We miss you already! Before we see you in September (love that song!), we’d like to share with you our #tuesdaythoughts #cmon.”
