On Tuesday, Netflix released a new documentary on the Dallas Cowboys franchise titled “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.” The film looks back at the 1990s, an era when the team experienced significant success on the field. During that period, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Michael Irvin played a key role in the team’s achievements.
Irvin, along with teammates such as Emmitt Smith, Nate Newton, and Troy Aikman, contributed to making the Cowboys one of the most dominant teams of that time. However, the documentary also examines aspects of their lives off the field.
In one segment of the documentary, Irvin discusses what became known as the infamous “White House,” a location where players would gather outside of football activities. Irvin described it by saying: “In that room, you may be smoking weed, this room, they may be doing X or coke, whatever. There was a group of girls in each room and you just kind of bounced from room to room,” said Irvin.
The team’s strong performance during games was noted alongside their high-profile lifestyles away from football. The documentary uses interviews and reflections from those involved to provide perspective on both elements.
The interest surrounding stories like these has kept media attention focused on the Cowboys over many years. Team owner Jerry Jones’s management style continues to draw headlines for the franchise.
The release of this documentary comes as Netflix seeks to highlight prominent moments in sports history through original content offerings.
