The Dallas Cowboys have traded edge rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers, ending their association with a player widely considered one of the most talented defenders in the league. In exchange for Parsons, the Packers sent Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark and first-round picks in 2026 and 2027 to Dallas. As part of the deal, Green Bay signed Parsons to a four-year contract that includes $120 million fully guaranteed at signing and $136 million in total guarantees, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

Parsons, who is 26 years old, has been selected to the Pro Bowl each year since he entered the league and has earned Associated Press All-Pro honors three times. He was named AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and is one of only four players to record at least 10 sacks in each of his first four seasons. The others—Reggie White, Derrick Thomas, and Dwight Freeney—have their Bronze Busts displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A former longtime NFL general manager who scouted Parsons during his college career at Penn State commented on the trade: “He changes the game (…). Green Bay is saying, ‘We’re getting a guy here that is in his prime. This guy could be a Hall of Famer.’ When you can get the star, you get the star. That’s it. (…) And there has been a lot more given up [historically] for a player of this magnitude. For Green Bay, it’s a good trade. And with Dallas, who knows where they are as a football team?”

The move comes as Dallas prepares for its season opener against last year’s Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. Questions have arisen about how Dallas will address Parsons’ departure from its defense—a void described by some as extremely difficult to fill.

Cowboys fans are familiar with protracted contract negotiations under team owner and general manager Jerry Jones but also accustomed to resolutions being reached without key players leaving. However, negotiations with Parsons ultimately resulted in a breakup rather than another extended partnership.

Brian Schottenheimer takes over as head coach after nearly three decades as an assistant in the league and now faces added scrutiny following this high-profile roster change.

The Packers view themselves as legitimate contenders and appear confident that giving up future draft capital is worthwhile for acquiring what they see as perhaps “the best defensive player in football,” according to the same former general manager.

Dallas hosts Green Bay on Sept. 28 in what is expected to be one of this season’s most anticipated matchups.

Commenting further on why such trades are rare among elite players like Parsons, the former general manager said: “You don’t trade a generational player (…). I wouldn’t do it.”

For Green Bay, securing Parsons is viewed internally as an easy decision; public reaction continues to focus on uncertainty about Dallas’ reasoning behind letting go of one of its biggest stars.
