McCaffrey’s health crucial as 49ers seek return to form behind Purdy

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey’s health is emerging as a focal point in the team’s preparations for the upcoming season. As clips of McCaffrey returning to on-field workouts circulate, questions arise about how his performance could impact quarterback Brock Purdy and the franchise’s prospects.

In the past year, injuries have hindered McCaffrey, leading to a disappointing season for the 49ers. His Achilles tendonitis and PCL injury coincided with setbacks for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams. The team’s management, including head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, have taken steps to solidify their commitment to Purdy, signing him to a five-year contract worth $265 million.

Statistical analysis from FOX Sports research shows a marked difference in Purdy’s performance depending on whether McCaffrey is available. In games with McCaffrey, Purdy has registered an .783 win percentage and higher averages across several passing categories compared to games played without him.

Purdy commented on having McCaffrey back at practice earlier this month: “It’s awesome,” he said when asked about having a healthy McCaffrey at practice. “Obviously, he’s a guy that the defense has to be accounting for. And the minute he goes into a one-on-one situation, I’m drooling over that. I want that. And we gotta capitalize on that. … And then obviously, by him being there, other guys open up as well.”

The running back has faced numerous injuries throughout his career but remains focused on maintaining his readiness for play. “I feel great, man,” he said. “I’ve been through a lot as far as injuries go in my career. Had to come back from a lot. Any time you get through one of those [joint] practices and feel good, I get excited and don’t take it for granted. I know that every day I’ve got to work on a bunch of different things to keep it that way.”

Shanahan reiterated his support for Purdy after the recent contract agreement: “I want him to be the leader he’s always been (…) There’s no worse thing to do than ask people to do something extra just because of their contract. That’s when you start making stuff up. Brock’s earned his contract, and he’s going to earn what he gets going forward.”

With core players including tight end George Kittle and receiver Ricky Pearsall expected to return healthy alongside McCaffrey and Purdy, expectations remain high for San Francisco as they seek consistency after last year’s challenges.
