From 2002 to 2005, Matt Leinart was a key figure for the University of Southern California football team. During his time with the Trojans, he won the Heisman Trophy in 2004 and led the program to national championships in both 2003 and 2004. Leinart was also named Most Valuable Player in both the 2004 Rose Bowl and the 2005 Orange Bowl.

Leinart’s college career turned him into a well-known figure on campus and in college football circles. Alongside teammates like Reggie Bush and coach Pete Carroll, he contributed to a period of high performance for USC football, building on its established legacy.

In a recent viral moment shared online, Leinart’s young son asked Alexa, Amazon’s digital assistant, “Who’s Matt Leinart?” Alexa responded: “Matt Leinart was a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at USC and a top 10 NFL draft pick, but his pro career didn’t amount to much.” This response has been widely circulated as an example of how technology can offer blunt assessments.

After leaving USC, Leinart was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals as the tenth overall pick in 2006. He played four seasons for Arizona, largely serving as backup to Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Kurt Warner. Following his professional playing career, he transitioned to work as a college football analyst on Fox Sports.

Despite ongoing discussions about his potential during his National Football League tenure and comparisons to other players from that era—most notably after USC’s loss to Texas in the 2006 Rose Bowl—Leinart remains closely associated with one of USC’s most successful periods. His impact alongside notable peers helped make them household names through their collective achievements.

There is continued debate regarding what more might have been possible in Leinart’s professional football journey, but his contributions at USC are recognized as significant within college football history.
