No one has questioned the work ethic of Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray since the team included an “independent study” clause in his 2022 contract extension. However, running back Michael Carter recently defended Murray’s commitment during a press interaction this week.
The question posed to Carter was about how he stays ready despite limited opportunities on the field. In his answer, Carter spoke about finding work-life balance through video games before shifting focus to support Murray.
According to Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic, Carter launched into a strong defense of his quarterback: “Now, I’m not on it all day,” Carter said, per Mackie. “I know how you did the last guy, which (…) cause he works really fucking hard. He works really fucking hard. That’s bullshit.”
Murray has faced past criticism for playing too many video games and not doing enough film study. The Cardinals originally required him to complete four hours of film study per week without distractions such as video games or browsing the internet as part of his five-year, $230.5 million extension.
After Pro Football Talk reported on the homework clause, the Cardinals removed it from Murray’s contract.
Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. expressed support by liking multiple posts that quoted Carter’s comments defending Murray.
Murray is preparing for his seventh NFL season with a career regular-season record of 36-45-1, one playoff appearance without a win, and two Pro Bowl selections.
