Marv Levy, a former NFL head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer, is recognized for his significant contributions to American football. Born on August 3, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, Levy was raised in a Jewish family that valued hard work and education. Levy graduated from South Shore High School in 1943 and joined the United States Army Air Forces during World War II as a meteorologist. He later attended Coe College in Iowa, where he studied English literature and participated in various sports. After earning a Master’s degree in English history from Harvard University in 1951, Levy began his coaching career at St. Louis Country Day School.
His coaching journey included roles at Coe College, the University of New Mexico, the University of California, Berkeley, and William & Mary. Levy entered professional football with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1969 and worked with other teams before becoming head coach of the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. He won two Grey Cups there before returning to the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Levy is best known for his time with the Buffalo Bills from 1986 to 1997. Under his leadership, the team achieved six division titles and four consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1990 to 1993. Although they did not win a Super Bowl, Levy’s strategies left a lasting impact on the league.
Levy retired at age 72 and was inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canadian Football Hall of Fame. In addition to coaching, he authored several books and briefly returned to the Buffalo Bills as general manager.
Celebrating his 100th birthday at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, Levy was honored by former players like Jim Kelly for his leadership and influence both on and off the field.
Throughout his life, Levy’s Jewish heritage influenced his values and approach to leadership. He emphasized integrity, learning, humility, and justice—principles rooted in his upbringing.
