The Detroit Lions have received further recognition ahead of the 2025 National Football League season, with ESPN ranking the team third in watchability across the league. The evaluation highlights both offensive and defensive talent as key factors.
According to ESPN’s Ben Solak, head coach Dan Campbell is central to this designation. Solak wrote: “Then there is coach Dan Campbell, who is perhaps the most watchable head coach in the league. The Lions went for 33 fourth downs last season, including 45.6% on the opponent’s side of the field. In 2023? It was 48.4%, the highest rate since at least 2001. Punts and field goals would top the list of least watchable plays, and Campbell is here to eliminate them from the game.”
Players such as Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, Kerby Joseph, and Brian Branch are noted for contributing to what many observers view as one of the NFL’s most exciting teams.
The only teams ranked ahead of Detroit are the Washington Commanders and Baltimore Ravens—both opponents for Detroit during the upcoming season.
The franchise has experienced a shift in reputation over recent years. Previously considered less attractive to viewers due to long-standing struggles from 1999 through 2021, Detroit’s games now attract significant interest nationwide. Historical figures like Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Barry Sanders offered moments of excitement during his tenure in the 1990s; however, sustained success eluded those squads.
With continued national exposure through major broadcasts such as Thursday Night Football and Monday Night Football—and increased attention generated by media appearances like HBO’s “Hard Knocks”—the team has broadened its fanbase.
Detroit’s performance in recent seasons has positioned it not only among NFL contenders but also as a preferred viewing option for fans around the country.
