Walter Payton was born on July 25, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi. He was the second of three children to Peter and Alyne Payton.

Growing up in Columbia, Payton attended John J. Jefferson High School, an all-Black institution. In his senior year, he helped integrate Columbia High School.

Payton excelled in football, basketball, and track, earning all-state honors in football. He continued his athletic career at Jackson State University, where he set records and earned All-American honors. In 1975, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears and became a nine-time Pro Bowl selection.

Payton retired in 1987 with 16,726 rushing yards and 110 touchdowns. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993. Payton passed away on November 1, 1999, from bile duct cancer. His legacy endures through the Walter Payton Award and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. In Columbia, his contributions are honored with a statue and local tributes.

Walter Payton amassed 492 career receptions, 16,726 rushing yards, and scored 125 total touchdowns over his Hall of Fame career as a running back.

The Chicago Bears selected Walter Payton with the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 1975 NFL Draft.
