San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has expressed continued support for former quarterback Trey Lance as the team prepares to face the Los Angeles Chargers in their preseason finale at Levi’s Stadium. Lance, who was drafted third overall by San Francisco in 2021 after a major trade-up, is now with the Chargers and expected to serve as backup to Justin Herbert.
Lynch shared his perspective during an appearance on Bay Area radio station KNBR. “I’m a huge fan of Trey,” Lynch said Thursday morning. “He was class throughout.” He further added, “I’m really excited what’s going on for him down with the Chargers (…) It seems like a new environment has spurred a great opportunity for him, and he’s making the most of it. So, huge fan of Trey, his family. Hopefully, we get a chance to see them all, and pulling for him, always.”
Trey Lance’s stint with the 49ers was marked by injuries and competition from Brock Purdy, ultimately leading to his trade to the Dallas Cowboys before joining Los Angeles this offseason.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan also expressed positive sentiments about Lance ahead of Saturday’s game. “I’m pulling for Trey. I love Trey,” Shanahan said. “One of the best people I’ve been around, and I really hope it works out for him.”
The preseason matchup between San Francisco and Los Angeles will provide both teams with another look at their rosters before regular season play begins.
