A number of observers believe the San Francisco 49ers sent a message to wide receiver Jauan Jennings following a recent roster move. However, general manager John Lynch has stated that no such intention should be inferred.
Jennings, who is seeking a new contract with San Francisco, has been unable to practice due to a calf injury. During his absence from training, the team acquired wide receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick and received a seventh-round pick as part of the trade.
Lynch addressed public speculation when he appeared on KNBR. “No messages,” said Lynch. “We like the player, Skyy. I just talked about that. We love Jauan. We’re getting close to this season [starting] — players gotta practice. But if they’re not healthy enough to do it, they can’t. It’s kind of where we’re at with Jauan right now. But Jauan, we’re getting there, where we’ve got to get out there on that field. And we’ll continue to let that thing unfold.(…)Like I said, Jauan’s a big part of this team (…) And we’re looking forward to the time when he’s back out there again, and hopefully, that’s soon.” This statement was made by John Lynch.
The situation surrounding Jennings is described as complicated due to his contract status combined with his current injury issue. A long-term injury could impact his value if an agreement on a new contract is not reached soon.
There have been no suggestions from sources that Jennings plans to sit out games related to his contract negotiations, and indications are that he wants to return and compete as soon as possible.
