John Elway cleared of charges in fatal golf cart accident involving Jeff Sperbeck

Police have completed their investigation into the golf cart accident that resulted in the death of Jeff Sperbeck, a close friend and former agent of John Elway. The incident occurred on April 26 in La Quinta, California, when Sperbeck fell from a golf cart driven by Elway. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Sperbeck succumbed to his injuries on April 30.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office announced through a press release that Elway will not face charges. Sheriff Chad Bianco said, “Following a thorough investigation into the death of Jeff Sperbeck, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has determined that the incident was a tragic accident with no evidence of criminal activity or intent. Consequently, no criminal charges will be filed at this time, and the case will be documented as an accidental death.” Bianco also confirmed to 9NEWS that they found “nothing criminal” after speaking to everyone involved.

According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS in Denver, Elway was neither intoxicated nor driving recklessly at the time of the accident.

John Elway is known for his illustrious career with the Denver Broncos from 1983 to 1998, leading them to two Super Bowl victories before retiring. He later served as an executive for the team until 2022. Elway and Sperbeck began working together in 1990 when Sperbeck became his agent. They also co-founded the 7Cellars winery.

Sperbeck’s agency represented several notable NFL players including Ronnie Lott and Joey Porter.
