San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana has expressed his support for the team’s decision to sign quarterback Brock Purdy to a lucrative contract extension. The 49ers extended Purdy’s contract for five years, worth $265 million, with $181 million guaranteed and a no-trade clause. This deal positions Purdy among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL ahead of the 2025 season.
Montana, speaking with Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, praised Purdy’s performance. “He plays within himself,” Montana said. He highlighted that Purdy avoided the common pitfall of trying to do too much in his second year, unlike many first-year standouts who struggle in their sophomore seasons.
Purdy was selected as the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft by the 49ers and quickly made an impact by winning his first seven starts as a rookie. Despite suffering a torn ulnar collateral ligament during the NFC Championship Game in January 2023, he recovered to start as San Francisco’s QB1 and became a finalist for the 2023 MVP Award. His efforts helped lead the team close to a Super Bowl victory in February 2024.
Despite these achievements, some analysts have labeled Purdy as a “game manager” and “overrated.” An injury crisis affected San Francisco’s 2024 season, with Purdy missing games due to shoulder and elbow injuries. Montana defended Purdy’s consistency despite these challenges: “It’s not like he hasn’t done the job,” he said.
Purdy finished the 2024 regular season ranked seventh in adjusted QBR and fifth in passing yards per game according to Pro Football Reference. However, ESPN surveys did not place him among the top ten quarterbacks in the league. Purdy will have an opportunity to address these opinions on September 7 when the Niners face off against the Seattle Seahawks.
Joe Montana is known for his Hall of Fame career with a passer rating of 92.3 and over 40,000 passing yards. He attended eight Pro Bowls after being drafted by San Francisco with the 82nd overall pick in 1979.
