Jimmy Johnson, a Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee and former Dallas Cowboys coach, returned to Arkansas for a public appearance at the Little Rock Touchdown Club. Johnson addressed nearly 1,000 attendees at the Statehouse Convention Center, reflecting on his career and longstanding connections to the University of Arkansas.
Johnson discussed his time as a Razorback player and coach in Fayetteville. He spoke about wanting to succeed Frank Broyles as head coach after the 1976 season. “I wasn’t as prepared to be a head coach as much as Lou was,” Johnson said regarding Lou Holtz‘s hiring in 1977. Years later, he hoped for another chance when Holtz was fired but learned that Ken Hatfield would be chosen instead. “I played at Arkansas, have love for Arkansas; I wanted to be the Arkansas head football coach (… ) I was upset, but shortly thereafter, I got the University of Miami job,” Johnson told attendees.
Johnson credited Larry Lacewell with advising him to take the Miami Hurricanes job if he wanted to win a national championship and reach the National Football League (NFL) level. The decision led him to two national titles—one in college and two Super Bowl victories with Dallas.
He recalled facing Arkansas as Miami’s head coach during home-and-home games in 1987 and 1988. He also acknowledged Ken Hatfield’s critical punt return against Texas during their playing days: Hatfield provided one of three video tributes during the event alongside messages from Terry Bradshaw and Dan Hampton.
Former NFL players like Barry Switzer succeeded Johnson in Dallas after he departed over differences with owner Jerry Jones, another Razorbacks alumnus. Reflecting on his relationship with Jones, Johnson said: “We’re really good now, like, we’re best friends (… ) It’s a good lesson for everybody (… ) Dallas was the worst team in the league when we first went there. Every day, we communicated. Then, we stopped communicating.”
When discussing his approach to coaching stars such as Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin at Dallas—and motivating them differently—he remarked: “I had to holler at Michael to get him going. If I hollered at Emmitt, he’d go into a shell and we’d not get anything out of him the rest of the day. Troy, he’s my guy.” On recruiting Smith away from Florida while at Miami: “I think [Florida] had NIL back then.”
Johnson reflected on current trends within professional football: “Players are still the key. It’s a little top-heavy in the rosters. The bottom ends of the rosters are not as talented as they need to be.” He also described transitioning into coaching at Miami late in their season and dealing with assistants who learned they would not become head coach just before meeting him.
Sharing anecdotes about his school days with Janis Joplin and bridge tournaments at university—including how his parents influenced his decision to attend Arkansas—Johnson shared personal moments beyond football strategy.
Now retired from broadcasting and living near south Florida on his boat “Three Rings,” Johnson expressed appreciation for returning home: “I still pull for the Razorbacks (… ) It’s really a pleasure for me to be back here. I’ve got great memories of the Arkansas Razorbacks.”
Johnson continues connecting with former teammates each year since leaving active coaching duties: “Now we have a chance to enjoy it like we should have then (… ) I’m doing that now.”
