Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has shown rare emotion reflecting on the team’s 2023 playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, described as one of the most significant defeats in franchise history. The moment was captured in Netflix’s eight-part series, “America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,” which follows Jones’ tenure with the team.
In discussing the loss, Jones said, “Oh, what a disaster. This loss hurt us, in every way, more than any one we’ve ever had.”
Jon Machota of The Athletic echoed Jones’ feelings about the defeat. “I believe the Cowboys’ 2023 playoff loss to the Packers (down 48-16 midway through the fourth quarter) is the worst loss in franchise history,” Machota wrote on X.
The Cowboys entered the postseason following a strong year, finishing 12-5 for a third consecutive season under quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. They secured the second overall seed in the NFC and held a league-best home winning streak but fell behind quickly against Green Bay, trailing 27-0 before halftime. The final score was 48-32.
Packers quarterback Jordan Love recorded three touchdowns with no turnovers in his first career playoff start. Running back Aaron Jones ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Romeo Doubs caught six passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. Dallas’ Prescott ended with over 400 passing yards but threw two interceptions.
After this defeat, Dallas missed the playoffs in 2024 for the first time since 2020 after posting a losing record of 7-10. Following that outcome, Jones replaced head coach Mike McCarthy with Brian Schottenheimer.
The Cowboys have not appeared in a conference championship game since their Super Bowl-winning season in 1996—now stretching to nearly thirty years without such an appearance.
References were made to past Dallas successes under Hall of Famers like Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, and Deion Sanders as contrasts to recent struggles.
Jones’ influence continues to keep public focus on Dallas off-the-field as well as on it, maintaining discussion about “America’s Team” despite ongoing postseason disappointments.
