The Dallas Cowboys face uncertainty as they approach the 2025 season, with ongoing contract talks between owner and general manager Jerry Jones and linebacker Micah Parsons remaining unresolved. Parsons, who was drafted No. 12 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, has recorded 52.5 sacks over his first four seasons and earned four Pro Bowl selections, two All-Pro First Team honors, and the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.
Parsons has requested a trade as he enters the final year of his contract, asking for a new deal that reflects his contributions on defense. He reported to training camp but has refused to practice until his contractual situation changes. Negotiations have stalled, with no significant discussions reported for several weeks as Week 1 approaches.
When asked about Parsons’ possible decision to sit out games if an agreement is not reached, Jones drew a comparison to former Dallas running back Emmitt Smith’s absence at the start of the 1993 season due to similar contract issues.
“That’s his right,” Jones said on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” when asked about the possibility of Parsons sitting out Week 1. “Emmitt wasn’t here either. And guess what? We still won a Super Bowl.”
Smith returned after missing the initial two games that season, with Dallas going on to win a championship that year. By referencing this history, Jones suggested confidence in his approach during negotiations and implied that team success is possible without Parsons in the lineup.
Despite these comments, questions remain about whether Dallas can replicate past results in today’s league conditions without its standout defender. The situation continues to develop as opening week nears.
