Another year has passed, and the Dallas Cowboys remain the most valuable sports franchise, with Forbes listing their worth at $12.8 billion. However, despite this financial success, the team has not won a Super Bowl in 29 years.

Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys since 1989, is known for his hands-on approach. He has influenced many aspects of the team’s operations and marketing strategies. Jones made major decisions like firing Hall of Famer Tom Landry and hiring Jimmy Johnson as head coach.

When asked about how the Cowboys maintain their high profile without championship wins, Jones offered a straightforward response: “I bust my a–.” He added further detail during an interview at training camp: “Exact same hard work that is going on in the football. I work my a– off. And that hasn’t slowed down (…) I do believe, if we’re not being looked at, I’ll do my part to get us looked at…That controversy is good stuff,” said Jones at the Netflix premiere of America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.

This attitude appears in a recent Netflix docuseries examining Jones’s leadership and including comments from past players such as Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, and Charles Haley. Within that series, Jones reflected on past failures to win another title: “What’s the common denominator? Jones. I get it (…) How long has it been since Buffalo won the Super Bowl?” he said, drawing comparisons to other teams facing similar challenges.

Despite recent strong seasons including several NFC East titles and twelve-win campaigns, the Cowboys finished 2024 with seven wins and ten losses after injuries affected their roster. Yet Jones said he does not plan to change his approach: “I just can’t get as convicted that the way we’re doing it – that needs to change (…) The a– kicking that comes with this doesn’t deter me at all.”

Attention now turns to linebacker Micah Parsons’ future with Dallas. Recent reports indicate that interest from teams like the Green Bay Packers may be complicated by lingering frustration from last season’s playoff loss against Green Bay—a defeat which Jones described as especially painful: “This loss hurt us, in every way, more than any one we’ve ever had,” he stated while watching game footage during filming of the Netflix series.

Rather than seeing Parsons traded to Green Bay or another conference rival following that loss, speculation suggests Dallas might only consider offers from teams seen as less threatening.

Dallas head coach Brian Schottenheimer commented on Parsons’ availability for Week 1 against Philadelphia. “I feel good about that. Yeah,” Schottenheimer said when asked if Parsons would play regardless of contract negotiations.

As discussions around key player contracts continue and questions about future team success remain unanswered, both supporters and critics continue to debate whether Jerry Jones’s determination is an advantage or a liability for one of professional football’s highest-profile franchises.
