Before his first training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Aaron Rodgers will participate in the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament featuring former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis. Bettis, who retired after helping the Steelers win the Super Bowl in 2005, hopes Rodgers can replicate that success in 2025. However, Bettis points out a potential issue: “I think the one big question that you have to ask yourself is, can you protect him?” he told CBS Sports.

Bettis emphasized the importance of protecting Rodgers and noted that despite being 41 years old, Rodgers remains a talented quarterback. The Steelers’ offensive line is young, with only Isaac Seumalo and Broderick Jones having more than one year of NFL experience. Bettis believes solidifying the offensive line is crucial for success.

The running game also plays a significant role in supporting Rodgers. With Najee Harris now with the Chargers, Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson are expected to fill his shoes. Bettis expressed confidence in their abilities: “I think he and Kaleb are a great 1-2 punch at that position.”

In addition to protection and a strong running game, depth at receiver and improved run defense were offseason priorities for Pittsburgh. Despite losing George Pickens, they acquired DK Metcalf from Seattle and signed veteran Robert Woods.

Bettis has faith in coach Mike Tomlin’s ability to lead the team to success: “He’s doing everything he can possibly do with the talent he’s been given.” Bettis believes making it to the playoffs should be a priority for the team.

Rodgers’ decision to retire after this season might benefit both him and the team. Bettis remarked on playing one’s final season: “You feel free because you’re like, ‘Hey, no expectations.'”

Both Bettis and Rodgers will compete in the American Century Championship from July 11-13. The event raises $8 million for charities, which Bettis finds rewarding: “It’s a great experience… I’m excited to be a part of it.”
