Jauan Jennings, wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, has remained sidelined during training camp with a calf injury as speculation grows around his contract status. Jennings, who delivered 77 receptions and close to 1,000 receiving yards last season, has become a central figure in the team’s offseason discussions.
His absence from practice has raised questions among analysts and insiders about whether the reported injury is being used as leverage in ongoing contract negotiations. Mike Florio, speaking on PFT Live alongside Chris Simms, commented, “I wonder if Jauan Jennings really would be magically healthy if they splash the pot a little bit, and give him some more money.” Florio described agent Drew Rosenhaus’s push for a new deal following Jennings’ strong season: “After the year that he had last year, where he grossly overperformed a 7 and a half million dollar APY, I suspect Drew has been banging the door – since the season ended. And when that didn’t get anywhere, okay, I want a new contractor or trade by the starting camp. You’re right, it came out of nowhere.”
Simms added his view on Jennings’ strategy: “It’s a tactical play right before training camp started to go. Wait, I have a role. Let me throw this out here now because they’re a little desperate at the wide receiver position.” He compared Jennings’ approach to previous situations where players used their value to influence front office decisions.
The 49ers face additional uncertainty in their receiving group with Brandon Aiyuk recovering from knee surgery and Demarcus Robinson facing possible suspension. This situation positions Jennings as one of quarterback Brock Purdy’s primary targets as the regular season approaches.
Florio also discussed potential risks in Jennings’ current position: “If you go out there and play, how many guys have a calf injury and all of a sudden they tear their Achilles? Yeah. So I don’t want that.” Simms noted that holding out can pressure teams: “They get desperate, and they do splash the pot for him. Teddy KGB style.”
General manager John Lynch addressed these developments while speaking on KNBR’s “Murph & Markus” program regarding whether acquiring Skyy Moore was intended as motivation for Jennings: “No message… We like the player, Skyy. We love Jauan.” Lynch further outlined expectations for participation: “We’re getting close to the season. Players got to practice, but if they’re not healthy enough to do it, they can’t. So that’s kind of where we’re at with Jauan right now… We’re getting there, where we got to get out there on that field. We’ll continue to let that thing unfold (… ) Jauan’s a big part of this team, and we’re looking forward to the time when he’s back out there again and hopefully that’s soon.”
With two weeks before kickoff, both sides face growing urgency to resolve differences over health status and contract terms.
