Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter missed practice for the third week in a row, raising questions about his availability as the 2025 NFL season approaches. The wide receiver and cornerback did not participate in team drills on Wednesday due to an upper-body injury, according to Jaguars reporter Michael DiRocco.
“Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter did not participate in team drills for the third consecutive practice on Wednesday (upper body injury),” DiRocco reported.
Hunter, who won the Heisman Trophy last year, was absent from the team’s second preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. He previously appeared in a preseason matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, recording 10 snaps on offense and eight on defense.
The rookie reportedly returned to practice on Tuesday but only took part in “alignment and assignment” drills while sitting out full-team sessions. Head coach Liam Coen provided an update on Hunter’s status: “I’ve got to see what he looks like tomorrow (…) I think the goal is to try to get him out there for the joint [practices].” Coen also said, “If we have to be smart with him tomorrow in order to get him out there in the joint, that would be the preference (…) Just for that quality work for him, especially on both sides.”
Hunter has participated in 188 offensive snaps and 176 defensive snaps during team periods. His dual-role capability continues to prompt discussion about how much responsibility is realistic for one player over a full season.
Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Rod Woodson commented: “90 snaps a game on offense and defense for 17 weeks? That’s a tough ask. If anyone can do it, it’s him, but it’s tough on your body.”
Reports indicate that Hunter’s injury is considered minor, with gradual progress toward full fitness. It remains uncertain whether he will join upcoming joint practices with the Miami Dolphins scheduled later this week.
