The Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Wednesday that they have waived wide receiver Joshua Cephus due to an injury. This roster move comes as the team is deep into training camp and approaching the start of the National Football League season.
According to the Jacksonville Jaguars, “The Jacksonville Jaguars have waived WR Joshua Cephus with an injury designation, the team announced today.”
With rosters needing to be trimmed to 53 players ahead of the new season, tough decisions are being made across the league. Head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone will finalize which players remain on the roster. It is their first time overseeing this process for the team.
Throughout training camp and preseason games, Cephus competed for a spot at wide receiver, often working with the second unit. His performance in those games was noted by observers, but his recent injury affected his chances of making the final roster. Despite his release, Cephus is expected to have opportunities elsewhere.
For other receivers lower on the depth chart, Cephus’s departure provides additional chances to secure a spot on the final roster. The Jaguars’ last preseason game will take place this Saturday against the Miami Dolphins, likely giving these players more playing time as starters are expected to sit out.
Tony Boselli, executive vice president of football operations for the Jaguars, joined Gladstone and Coen after mandatory minicamp earlier this summer in Jacksonville.
The Jaguars continue their preparations for Week 1 while evaluating which remaining players will complete their roster.
