Temperatures are rising, but NFL training camps signal the return of football. In anticipation of the new season, cllct has ranked the 10 most iconic football cards in history.
Among these is the 1965 Topps Joe Namath card. While Namath may not be among the greatest players in NFL history, his larger-than-life persona as “Broadway Joe” has cemented his legacy. The 1965 Topps rookie card is notable for its size and distinctive photography. It measures approximately 2.5-by-5 inches and is part of a set known for its Tall Boy design. The No. 122 Namath card is particularly sought after, with source photography previously selling for nearly $200,000.
Despite its popularity, a gem mint example of this card has yet to be graded by PSA, SGC, BGS, or CGC. Only five out of 2,317 submissions have received a PSA 9 grade. One such card sold for $264,000 in 2018, marking the highest price paid for any Namath card.
Joe Namath was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985 during his first year of eligibility. He was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals as the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 1965 NFL Draft and also chosen by the New York Jets as the second overall pick in the first round of the 1965 AFL Draft.
