History shows NFL trades often involve stars like Eric Dickerson moved at peak career

The Dallas Cowboys’ decision to trade Micah Parsons to Green Bay after four seasons as a leading pass rusher follows a notable trend in the National Football League, where top players have been traded away during their most productive years.

This move echoes the 2018 trade that sent Khalil Mack, then a two-time All-Pro and one-time Defensive Player of the Year, from Oakland to Chicago. Both Parsons and Mack were traded following unsuccessful contract negotiations, with each deal involving two first-round picks. In addition to draft capital, Dallas received defensive tackle Kenny Clark from Green Bay.

Mack had a strong impact in Chicago, achieving All-Pro status in his first season. However, the Bears did not win a playoff game during his four years before he was traded again, this time to the Chargers. The Raiders used their acquired picks on running back Josh Jacobs—who played well before leaving as a free agent—and cornerback Damon Arnette, who was released early in his second season.

Trades involving star players during their prime are not uncommon in league history. In Jerry Jones’ first year as owner of the Cowboys in 1989, Dallas traded Herschel Walker to Minnesota for several draft picks. Those selections helped build three Super Bowl-winning teams by bringing key contributors such as Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Emmitt Smith.

Another significant Dallas trade involved Charles Haley. Acquired from San Francisco in exchange for second- and third-round picks ahead of the 1992 season, Haley provided crucial defensive strength that led to three Super Bowl victories over four years.

Other examples include Randy Moss’s move from Minnesota to Oakland for a package that included a high draft pick—a deal that yielded limited returns for both teams. Moss later set a single-season touchdown record with New England following another trade.

Fran Tarkenton was traded by Minnesota to New York but returned six years later and led the Vikings to three Super Bowls while earning NFL MVP honors in 1975.

Eric Dickerson’s transfer from Los Angeles Rams to Indianapolis is also cited among major trades. The running back played an important role in helping Indianapolis reach the playoffs after ten seasons out and led the league in rushing yards during his second year with the team.

Marshall Faulk was dealt by Indianapolis after leading the league with over 2,200 yards from scrimmage. His new team, St. Louis Rams, won the Super Bowl immediately following his arrival while Faulk earned consecutive AP Offensive Player of the Year awards and an MVP award between 1999 and 2001.

Christian McCaffrey moved from Carolina to San Francisco during the 2022 season and rapidly became central to their offense, winning AP Offensive Player of the Year honors when San Francisco reached the Super Bowl during his tenure.

Other prominent trades highlighted include those involving Fred Dean (San Francisco), Darrelle Revis (Tampa Bay), Champ Bailey (Denver), Paul Warfield (Miami), Mike Haynes (Los Angeles Raiders), all contributing significantly either immediately or over time after changing teams through high-profile trades.

These transactions demonstrate that trading star players at peak performance remains an established practice across different eras in professional football.
