Hendon Hooker has signed with the Carolina Panthers practice squad after being released by the Detroit Lions. The move was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and follows a series of changes to the Lions’ quarterback roster.
Hooker, who was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft from the University of Tennessee, joined the Lions with expectations that he would serve as a long-term backup behind Jared Goff. However, he played in only three games during the 2024 season and completed six out of nine passes for 62 yards. Despite these opportunities, Hooker did not secure a permanent place on Detroit’s active roster.
The Lions have instead decided to keep Kyle Allen as their backup quarterback, signaling an emphasis on maintaining stability at that position. This decision resulted in Hooker’s release before the start of the new season.
Now part of the Panthers practice squad, Hooker will have an opportunity to further develop his skills and compete for a possible future role within Carolina’s organization. His move comes after a challenging rookie campaign in Detroit.
As Hooker starts this next chapter, he brings with him experience from his first year in professional football and aims to earn a spot on the Panthers’ main roster.
