Granada Hills High School’s football team used its double-wing formation to win 50-16 over North Hollywood on Thursday night. The game took place at a stadium named after Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee John Elway, who played quarterback at the school before his professional career.
Despite the connection to Elway, Granada Hills did not attempt any passes during the game. Instead, they relied on their running game, which allowed them to avenge a loss to North Hollywood in last year’s City Section playoffs.
The Highlanders’ defense featured All-City nose tackle Jayden Garcia. He made significant plays, including a 12-yard sack and tackles for losses. Bucky Brooks, Granada Hills head coach and NFL analyst, said about Garcia, “He’s really a good player (… ) He’s shown ability.”
Offensively, quarterback Drew Rosales ran for three touchdowns and had a 76-yard touchdown run. Wingback Michael Osuna scored twice, one touchdown coming from an 86-yard run. Troy Verso contributed with both an interception and a rushing touchdown. Evan Barte-Plange recovered a fumble during kickoff.
Brooks commented on his team’s performance: “It was a solid performance (… ) It was something we can build on.”
Granada Hills will face Venice in its next game.
