Soldiers from the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program at Fort Hood joined Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones at the USAA Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp on Tuesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The event provided soldiers with an opportunity to participate in various football-related competitions, including the 40-yard dash, broad jump, three-cone shuttle, receiving gauntlet, and quarterback arm challenge.

Participants’ performances were monitored on a live digital leaderboard, with the top team earning tickets to the Dallas Cowboys’ annual Salute to Service game.

“Being a Dallas Cowboys fan myself, it was really fun going from the nosebleeds to right on the field where they play,” said Sgt. Amber Solis, vice president of Fort Hood’s Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program.

Spc. Kristopher Landry, a tactical power generation specialist with 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, performed strongly in several challenges during the event. “It feels good (to win),” Landry said. “I’m not where I need to be, but it’s still good to feel like I can keep up or be better than them.”

After completing athletic events on the field, participating soldiers received a private tour of the National Medal of Honor Museum. Spc. Robert Winston commented on his experience: “Seeing the heroes who served before me and wore the same uniform before I did, it was truly amazing to see.”

The day concluded with participants enjoying a VIP viewing experience of Cowboys practice at The Star and having opportunities to meet Jones as well as greet players entering the field. Sgt. Sadie Clark shared her thoughts following her first experience at a Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers event: “I’ve never been a part of BOSS event, so it’s my first time (…) I’m excited to get back to work and tell everybody about my amazing experience.”
