Former Florida football coach Urban Meyer is set to be honored by the University of Florida during the 2025 football season, recognizing his enshrinement into the College Football Hall of Fame. This acknowledgment has led to renewed discussion about whether Meyer should also be added to the university’s Ring of Honor at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
The debate centers on Meyer’s record as head coach from 2005 to 2010, a period in which he led the team to two national championships and brought in notable recruits such as Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin. Under his leadership, Florida went 65-15, won two SEC titles, and saw 29 players drafted into the NFL.
Supporters cite these achievements along with his innovative offense and special teams play as reasons for induction into the Ring of Honor. Currently, eligibility for this recognition requires distinctions such as Heisman Trophy wins, membership in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (as achieved by Jack Youngblood and Emmitt Smith), or coaching national championship teams.
Critics point to how Meyer left the program after the 2010 season and concerns over player discipline during his tenure. Some note that following his departure, subsequent coaches benefited from Meyer’s last recruiting classes. The legacy also includes incidents involving player arrests; while Meyer was sometimes criticized for giving players multiple chances, some former players praise his mentorship.
Meyer’s coaching career continued with a national championship at Ohio State in 2014 before a brief stint in the NFL with Jacksonville. He then returned to broadcasting.
Meyer’s wife Shelley once reflected on their experience after former player Avery Atkins’ passing: “You can’t save them all.”
Discussion continues about when or if Meyer will join other notable names like Steve Spurrier and Danny Wuerffel on Florida’s stadium façade.
