Five football players from East Texas have been named to the watchlist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. This award, which is named after Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Earl Campbell, honors the top offensive player in Division I football who overcomes adversity and demonstrates qualities such as integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community involvement and tenacity.
To be eligible for the award, a player must either be born in Texas, have graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year Division I Texas college.
The list of East Texans on the current watchlist includes Georgia Tech quarterback and Longview native Haynes King; UT San Antonio quarterback and Rusk native Owen McCown; UTSA receiver and Jacksonville native Devin McCuin; Alabama running back and Tyler Legacy alum Jam Miller; and Middle Tennessee State tight end and Timpson graduate Hunter Tipton.
The top five finalists are expected to be announced in December.
Earl Campbell was recognized for his contributions on the field as an NFL running back. The award that bears his name highlights not only athletic performance but also character traits Campbell has come to represent.
