Famous athletes and entertainers mark milestone birthdays Aug. 21-27

A list of public figures from various fields are celebrating birthdays during the week of August 21 to August 27, as reported by The North State Journal.

On August 21, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member James Burton turns 86. Other notable birthdays include singer Jackie DeShannon at age 84, film director Peter Weir at age 81, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Willie Lanier at age 80, actor Loretta Devine at age 76, and actor Kim Cattrall at age 69.

August 22 marks the ninetieth birthday of author Annie Proulx. Baseball Hall of Fame member Carl Yastrzemski will be 86. Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee coach Bill Parcells is turning 84. Also reaching milestones are writer-producer David Chase and retired CBS newsman Steve Kroft, both aged 80, along with rock singer Roland Orzabal (Tears For Fears) at age 64.

On August 23, actor Vera Miles celebrates her ninety-sixth birthday while actor Barbara Eden turns ninety-four. Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Sonny Jurgensen is now ninety-one. Others marking their birthdays include ballerina Patricia McBride at eighty-three, former Surgeon General Antonia Novello at eighty-one, singer-songwriter Linda Thompson at seventy-eight, and rock singer Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) who is forty-seven.

August 24 features composer-musician Mason Williams at eighty-seven years old and R&B singer Marshall Thompson (The Chi-Lites) turning eighty-three. WWE co-founder Vince McMahon celebrates his eightieth birthday. Additional names include actor Anne Archer who is seventy-eight, Baseball Hall of Fame member Cal Ripken Jr., sixty-five; talk show host Craig Kilborn who is sixty-three; and actor-comedian Dave Chappelle now fifty-two.

Celebrating on August 25 are Tom Skerritt—now ninety-two—and former U.S. Poet Laureate Charles Wright at ninety. Other significant birthdays are Baseball Hall of Fame member Rollie Fingers at seventy-nine, rock musician Gene Simmons (Kiss), seventy-six; rock singer Rob Halford (Judas Priest), seventy-four; musician Elvis Costello at seventy-one; film director Tim Burton who is sixty-seven; singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) now fifty-eight; and model Claudia Schiffer who turns fifty-five.

Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge turns eighty on August 26 alongside R&B singer Valerie Simpson (Ashford & Simpson), seventy-nine; broadcast journalist Bill Whitaker, seventy-four; jazz musician Branford Marsalis who reaches sixty-five; and actor Macaulay Culkin marking his forty-fifth birthday.

Finally, for August 27: author William Least Heat-Moon will be eighty-six years old this week as well as actor Tuesday Weld who is eighty-two; actor G.W. Bailey now aged eighty-one; rock musician Alex Lifeson (Rush), seventy-two; and fashion designer and filmmaker Tom Ford celebrating sixty-four years.
