Twenty-five years ago, the Billboard Hot 100 featured artists like Faith Hill, Santana, and Destiny’s Child. The film “Mission: Impossible 2” was a box office hit, while “Gladiator” won the Academy Award for Best Picture and Russell Crowe took home Best Actor. The reality TV show “Survivor” also made its debut. In light of these milestones, ESPN has released its ultimate 53-man roster to honor the most dominant NFL players of the past quarter-century.
The roster includes four retired Minnesota Vikings legends and an active player who is making history. This selection was curated by ESPN analysts Aaron Schatz and Seth Walder, who chose 25 offensive players, 23 defensive players, five special teams players, and a practice squad. Only performances from the year 2000 onward were considered.
Among the wide receivers chosen are Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss and current star Justin Jefferson. They join Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, Terrell Owens, and Marvin Harrison on this list. Antonio Brown and Andre Johnson were assigned to the practice squad.
Former Vikings interior offensive lineman Steve Hutchinson was recognized as one of the top left guards over the past 25 years. Hutchinson played for both the Vikings and Seahawks during his career and made seven consecutive Pro Bowls starting in 2003. He is joined by Alan Faneca at left guard.
Jared Allen, another former Viking set to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, was highlighted as one of the best edge rushers alongside Demarcus Ware, Myles Garrett, and Julius Peppers. Allen’s peak performance included 22 sacks in 2011, contributing to his high ranking in total plus-EPA since 2001.
