During the lead-up to the 2025 NFL Draft, there was widespread agreement among analysts that three quarterbacks—Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, and Shedeur Sanders—were likely to be selected in the early rounds. Ward went first overall to the Tennessee Titans, while Dart was picked by the New York Giants at No. 25.
In a surprising development, Shedeur Sanders, who won the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, fell to the fifth round and was drafted 144th overall. He became the sixth quarterback selected after Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe, and Dillon Gabriel.
Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Eric Dickerson commented on this development during an appearance on Roggin and Rodney show on AM570 LA Sports. Dickerson said: “I tell you this much, what I heard from someone that’s in the NFL, that the NFL told, ‘Don’t draft him. Do not draft him (…) We’re going to make an example out of him.’ And this came from a very good source. A very good source (…) And he said that, I won’t say who, somebody called the Cleveland Browns and said, ‘Don’t do that. Draft him.’ Because they weren’t going to draft him either. They weren’t going to draft him. They were forced into drafting him because somebody made a call to them.” According to Dickerson, he wanted the Los Angeles Rams to select Sanders.
Shedeur Sanders is noted as one of the most discussed quarterbacks of his class and is recognized as being ready for professional football. He is also known as the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Deion Sanders. During his time at Colorado under offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who has past experience as an NFL head coach, Sanders ran a system similar to those found in professional teams.
Sanders showed promise in a preseason game against the Carolina Panthers with 138 passing yards and two touchdowns without interceptions. His next scheduled appearance is against Los Angeles in Cleveland on Saturday.
