In a recent edition of the Dodgers Dugout newsletter, Houston Mitchell, assistant sports editor for the Los Angeles Times, examined the top 10 center fielders in the history of the Dodgers franchise. The selection reflects both statistical achievements and broader contributions to team history.

Duke Snider was named as the leading center fielder. Snider played from 1947 through 1962, finishing his Dodgers career with a .300 batting average and hitting more than 40 home runs in five straight seasons. He was noted for his power as well as other offensive skills such as leading the National League in runs on three occasions.

Willie Davis was ranked second on Mitchell’s list. Davis played for the Dodgers from 1960 to 1973, earning two All-Star selections and winning three Gold Gloves. While he played during what is considered one of baseball’s toughest eras for hitters, he still led the league in triples twice and remains the Los Angeles Dodgers’ leader in runs, hits, and triples.

Pete Reiser appeared third on the list, having been known for aggressive outfield defense that contributed to injuries throughout his career. Other players included were Matt Kemp, Mike Griffin, Cody Bellinger, Johnny Frederick, Jim Wynn, Brett Butler, and Kiké Hernández.

Mitchell noted that “Numbers listed are with the Dodgers only,” emphasizing a focus on performance specifically while members of the club.

The newsletter also presented readers’ own rankings based on ballot submissions. The fans’ top three mirrored much of Mitchell’s: Duke Snider led by a wide margin followed by Willie Davis and Matt Kemp.

The feature further included background stories about each player’s tenure and post-Dodgers careers. For example, it mentioned that Davis was traded after the 1973 season and never appeared on a Hall of Fame ballot despite his long major league career.

For subscribers interested in future rankings or submitting their opinions regarding other positions such as right fielders, Mitchell encourages participation via email correspondence through the Los Angeles Times website.

The evaluation reflects both individual performance data and historical context provided by each player’s impact during their time with the organization.
