Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list. Lagway is among 101 college football players in consideration for the award, which honors the top offensive player in Division I football who has strong ties to Texas.
The award is named after Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Earl Campbell, a native of Tyler, Texas. Campbell played for the Texas Longhorns and became the university’s first Heisman Trophy winner in 1977.
Lagway previously starred at Willis High School near Houston. He is one of 31 quarterbacks recognized on this year’s preseason list. In his freshman season with Florida, Lagway appeared in all 12 games and started seven, leading the Gators to a 6-1 record as a starter. Florida finished the season at 8-5.
During his first year, Lagway threw for 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns with nearly 60 percent pass completion and added 101 rushing yards. He tied Chris Leak’s program record for most wins by a true freshman quarterback and led all FBS true freshmen with a passer rating of 154.9.
The process for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award continues through the football season. Semifinalists will be announced in November, with finalists revealed in December. A committee that includes broadcasters, journalists, former players and fans will select the recipient.
Earl Campbell’s contributions to football as recognized by naming this award highlight his influence on players from Texas achieving prominence in college football.
