The Arizona State University football program has a range of experienced coaches, including Head Coach Kenny Dillingham, Offensive Coordinator Marcus Arroyo and Defensive Coordinator Brian Ward. However, attention is being drawn to defensive line coach Diron Reynolds for his notable contributions and career trajectory.
Reynolds started his coaching career at Brookland-Cayce High School as an assistant in the mid-1990s before moving through collegiate positions at Wake Forest and Indiana. His move to the National Football League began with the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 to 2006, where he held the role of Defensive Quality Control coach. During his time with the Colts, the team achieved a Super Bowl victory in the 2006 season.
The Colts’ defense played a key role during their playoff run, including securing interceptions against Tom Brady in the AFC Championship Game and Rex Grossman during the Super Bowl itself. As part of this staff, Reynolds contributed to helping secure the team’s first Super Bowl title since 1971.
After leaving Indianapolis, Reynolds joined the Miami Dolphins as Defensive Line Coach. Although Miami recorded only one win that season, Reynolds’ unit was highlighted for its productivity; Jason Taylor led with eleven sacks, while Joey Porter and Matt Roth added further contributions.
Reynolds continued his professional journey with a stint as Assistant Defensive Line Coach for the Minnesota Vikings. There he coached several high-profile players including Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Jared Allen—who posted twenty-two sacks in a standout 2011 season—and multiple-time Pro Bowler Kevin Williams. The stability provided by their defensive line helped Minnesota remain competitive during quarterback transitions.
Following his NFL experience, Reynolds moved between college programs: Stanford (2014; 2016-2022), Oklahoma (2015), and Michigan State (2023). During these years he mentored several linemen who later entered the National Football League draft; among them Solomon Thomas—a top-five pick in 2017—and Harrison Phillips.
Now at Arizona State University entering his second year, Reynolds faces optimism despite last season’s injuries along his defensive front. Returning players such as Prince Dorbah and Clayton Smith are expected to benefit from continued guidance under Reynolds’ coaching style. Both defensive tackles C.J. Fite and Jacob Rich Kongaika have shown promise and could emerge as top draft prospects with further development.
Hall of Famer Jared Allen appeared alongside his father Ronald Allen to unveil his Bronze Bust during Enshrinement Week on Aug. 2, 2025—a moment highlighting not only individual achievement but also underscoring connections formed across coaching careers like that of Diron Reynolds.
