The Detroit Lions have a storied history of running backs, with several players making significant impacts during their careers. While the team may not have enjoyed as much success as others in the league, its backfield has been graced by notable talents.
Barry Sanders stands out among these players. During his career from 1989 to 1998, Sanders rushed for over 1,000 yards each season, including an impressive 2,053-yard season in 1997. He was selected for the Pro Bowl every year and shared MVP honors with Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre in 1997. Sanders was named a first-team All-Pro six times and holds the franchise record for rushing yards by a wide margin. Despite his unexpected retirement, he is remembered as one of the best at his position.
Sanders’ achievements include ten seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards, scoring 109 touchdowns, and accumulating 15,269 rushing yards in total. One of his memorable moments came against the New England Patriots in 1994 when he evaded multiple tackles to score a touchdown.
Currently, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are among the talented running backs on the Lions’ roster.
