One of the most defining moments in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history is now a finalist in the team’s “50 Seasons Best Moments Presented by Ticketmaster” fan tournament. The moment in question is Derrick Brooks’ 44-yard interception return for a touchdown during Super Bowl XXXVII, a play many see as the ultimate highlight of the franchise’s first championship.
At the end of the 2002 season, the Buccaneers faced the Oakland Raiders with both teams bringing historic strengths—the league’s number-one ranked offense against its top-ranked defense. Throughout that game, Tampa Bay’s defense made significant plays: Dexter Jackson recorded two interceptions before halftime, Dwight Smith added two second-half pick-sixes, and Simeon Rice and Warren Sapp contributed to five sacks on Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon.
Despite holding a commanding lead late in the fourth quarter, uncertainty lingered after Oakland managed to score twice in the second half. With two minutes remaining and facing a third-and-18, Gannon attempted to connect with Marcus Knight. However, Brooks anticipated the throw, intercepted it near midfield and ran untouched to the end zone. As Brooks scored, Buccaneers radio announcer Gene Deckerhoff stated that “the dagger is in.”
Brooks finished that season as NFL Defensive Player of the Year after scoring four defensive touchdowns. The image of him celebrating his Super Bowl touchdown—football secured tightly and tears streaming down his face—remains deeply resonant among fans.
In this ongoing tournament bracket highlighting pivotal moments from five decades of team history, Brooks’ interception stands alongside other memorable feats by players such as Rondé Barber and Mike Evans. Fans will continue to vote over the coming week to determine which single moment will be named as greatest in team history.
