In recognition of their 50th season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have revealed Derrick Brooks as the top player in franchise history. The announcement concludes a countdown identifying the 50 greatest players to wear a Buccaneers uniform, with selections shaped by fan voting, Tampa Bay media, and team representatives.
Derrick Brooks, who played for the Buccaneers from 1995 through 2008, ranks second in franchise history behind Rondé Barber in seasons played (14), games played (224), and starts (221). Notably, Brooks never missed a game due to injury during his career—including all 11 playoff contests—starting 219 straight games from 1996 through his final season.
Brooks’ career gained momentum after Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin joined the coaching staff in 1996. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection at the end of the 1997 season and then appeared in ten consecutive Pro Bowls. His final Pro Bowl nod came in 2008, setting a team record with eleven total selections—tied for sixteenth most in league history.
He was named Associated Press All-Pro for nine straight years starting in 1997, including five first-team designations. In 2002, Brooks won NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 170 tackles, five interceptions, and four defensive touchdowns. During Super Bowl XXXVII that same season, he contributed a decisive play with a fourth-quarter interception returned for a touchdown.
Brooks is first on Tampa Bay’s all-time list with 2,198 tackles and leads all non-defensive backs on the team with twenty-five interceptions. He made over one hundred tackles in twelve different seasons and finished among the top six in Defensive Player of the Year voting four times.
Off the field, Brooks remains active within the Bay area community. He is distinguished as the only Buccaneer ever to receive the Walter Payton Man of the Year award; he shared this honor with Jim Flanigan of Chicago following a tie vote in 2000.
Reflecting on Brooks’ place atop this milestone ranking alongside Hall of Famers like Warren Sapp and Lee Roy Selmon as well as other notable teammates such as Barber and Mike Evans—the club’s statement reads: “In the end, it’s easy to see why fans and the voting council put Derrick Brooks in the number one spot in the franchise’s Top 50 Players countdown, even in the presence of such other deserving candidates as Sapp, Selmon, Barber and Mike Evans. Brooks is a Buccaneer for life, one of the best players ever at his position and an icon in his community. He is number one, and deservedly so.”
The process behind assembling this Top 50 list included input from fans throughout the offseason together with perspectives from media members covering Tampa Bay football as well as organizational representatives.
This initiative forms part of broader efforts by Tampa Bay to commemorate significant contributors across its five decades as an NFL franchise.
