Colorado coach Deion Sanders has selected Kaidon Salter, a Liberty transfer, as the starting quarterback for the Buffaloes’ season opener against Georgia Tech. Salter was chosen over freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis after what Sanders described as a close competition.
Salter will take over for Shedeur Sanders, who set numerous single-season team records last season and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns. With both Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter now in the NFL, Colorado will feature a different look on offense.
Salter is recognized for his dual-threat capability, having accounted for 66 touchdowns—47 passing and 19 rushing—over the past two seasons at Liberty. In contrast, Lewis is seen as more of a pocket passer with a quick release and poise gained from three high school seasons in Georgia where he threw for 11,010 yards. Lewis arrived early on campus to accelerate his grasp of Colorado’s offense.
Deion Sanders explained his decision by saying, “he’s the guy at this point.” Sanders also indicated that he hopes to involve Lewis in Friday night’s game at Folsom Field.
“He’s done it before,” said Sanders about Salter’s experience leading to his selection as starter.
