Coach Deion Sanders has drawn national attention for his strict approach to dress code rules among the Colorado Buffaloes football team. Entering his third year as head coach in Boulder, Sanders has continued to emphasize discipline and high standards for his players, both on and off the field.
Sanders recently went viral after a speech outlining clear expectations for student-athlete appearance during class. He addressed the team directly, saying: “No slides. If I see you with ’em, I’m gonna send people to campus tomorrow. If I see you with slides on campus, it’s going to be a problem. (…) If I see you with a hoodie on (up) in class with some headphones on in class, it’s gonna be a problem. If I see you sitting in the back of the classroom, it’s gonna be a problem. Do we understand that? (…) And if you’re online — if you have online classes — and you don’t have a shirt on, if you have a ‘wife beater’ on, or have something stupid on that’s causing a distraction or you’re walking around during that online session, it’s gonna be a problem. We good with that, guys?”
A former Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee known as “Coach Prime,” Sanders has often referenced personal philosophy about appearance and performance: “If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you play good. If you play good, they pay good.”
This season brings new challenges for Sanders as he leads the Buffaloes without key players Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter—both now playing in the National Football League—after having one of college football‘s most notable duos last year. In his first two seasons at Colorado, Sanders improved from a 4-8 record to 9-4.
Off the field, Sanders underwent surgery during the offseason to remove a cancerous tumor from his bladder and was declared cancer-free several months ago.
With the focus now shifted to advancing the program further in 2025, the Buffaloes open their season August 29 against Georgia Tech at Folsom Field.
The coming season will test whether Sanders’ standards and leadership can continue Colorado’s progress amid significant roster changes.
