The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Shilo Sanders, a safety who joined the team as an undrafted free agent earlier this year. Sanders was ejected from a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills before being released.
Deion Sanders, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee and father of Shilo, spoke about his son’s future following the release. “We’re praying that he gets another opportunity to go with a team, but if he doesn’t, the plans have already been put forward to what he’s going to do next,” Deion Sanders said.
Shilo Sanders had signed with the Buccaneers after not being selected in the NFL Draft in April. Despite questions about his coverage skills, there had been speculation that his ability as a tackler could help him make Tampa Bay’s 53-man roster given injuries in the team’s secondary.
The Buccaneers ultimately decided that Sanders was not ready for consistent action at the NFL level. The role of his preseason ejection in this decision is unclear. There remains a possibility that Tampa Bay could add him to its practice squad if another NFL team does not sign him.
During his final college season at Colorado, Sanders recorded 67 tackles, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and scored one defensive touchdown. In his previous season at Colorado, he registered 70 tackles, four forced fumbles and an interception.
Sanders began his college football career at South Carolina before transferring to Jackson State to play under Deion Sanders. He later moved again when Deion became head coach at Colorado.
