Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders is considering a strategy for his quarterbacks similar to the approach previously used by Michigan State Spartans coach Jonathan Smith. Reports indicate that Sanders plans to deploy freshman quarterback Julian Lewis in a role reminiscent of how Smith utilized Aidan Chiles during his time with Oregon State.
According to On3’s Peter Nakos, “it would not be surprising” to see Sanders adopt this method after naming Kaidon Salter as Colorado’s starting quarterback over Lewis. In 2023, Smith gave most game snaps to Clemson Tigers transfer DJ Uiagalelei while still providing Chiles with opportunities on the field. Chiles later transferred alongside Smith to Michigan State, a move considered part of Smith’s long-term plan.
Sanders confirmed this approach regarding Lewis’s participation in upcoming games: “He’s the guy. At this point, we’re praying and we’re hoping that you see some Juju periodically through the game as well. We would like to get him some reps as well, but the game predicates that,” Sanders said.
Lewis, who arrived at Colorado with a significant name, image and likeness (NIL) valuation, represents a major part of roster planning for Sanders. The coach has spoken about maintaining clear communication with Lewis about his future within the program.
“He knows where we stand,” Sanders said. “He knows what the future holds for him. He knows how we see him, and he knows what we expect of him. So it’s not an elongated conversation.”
This plan highlights the importance of keeping top talent engaged amid increased player mobility under current NIL regulations.
