This summer, Carlos Alcaraz found himself in a challenging position at Everton after making efforts to turn his loan move into a permanent one. Throughout the transfer window, several attacking midfielders joined Everton, which shifted focus away from Alcaraz despite his earlier impact during his loan spell from Flamengo last season.
Alcaraz played a significant role in crucial matches such as the win at Crystal Palace in February, which he cited as the moment he decided to work towards joining Everton permanently. Opportunities for him diminished as teammates returned from injury and as selection decisions depended on whether he might trigger a performance clause requiring Everton to sign him outright. Nevertheless, by the end of last season, Alcaraz contributed significantly by playing a part in all three goals against Fulham and scoring the winning goal against Newcastle United.
In a recent interview with Joe Thomas and other reporters at Finch Farm, Alcaraz discussed his approach: “I came here in January knowing that everything was going to depend on me and my own performances. I was very calm about that because I am confident in my own ability. (…) Even going into that final game, nothing had changed… I knew it was all going to be in the hands of the club.” Six days after that match, Everton agreed to a £12.5 million fee for Alcaraz.
Since then, new arrivals like Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jack Grealish and Tyler Dibling have gained attention among fans. Iliman Ndiaye has also been recognized as one of Everton’s top performers recently. The increasing competition within the squad means players now compete more actively for places, relieving pressure on individuals.
Despite this progress reducing Alcaraz’s immediate importance within the team, he delivered an influential performance against Mansfield Town on Wednesday. He spent an hour on the pitch linking play and scored with a 20-yard shot shortly after halftime.
After that win, Alcaraz spoke to club media: “I’ve said several times that scoring a goal with the Everton fans there is always great because the atmosphere is always amazing, so scoring a goal here with all the fans, and the stadium was full today. The fans are always amazing. (…) It’s so important. Lately, I might not be doing as well, but I know I have the support of my family, my girlfriend and the fans, so I will keep trying to show what I can do. I’m grateful to the fans who are always with us and always supporting us.”
As transfer deadline day approaches, manager David Moyes continues efforts to further strengthen Everton’s squad before the window closes.
