The Dallas Cowboys have addressed concerns about linebacker Micah Parsons’ back injury and his ongoing contract dispute. Team owner Jerry Jones has emphasized that Parsons’ health is a significant factor during negotiations for a contract extension.
“A few weeks ago, as the controversy around an extension for Parsons was beginning to grow, Jones made a remark to remind all the reporters what he thought about the player’s back injury. ‘I wish the back would get better.’ (…) In fact, Jerry even used Dak Prescott as an example to illustrate that a new deal was no guarantee of anything on the field. ‘Just because we sign Micah, it doesn’t mean that we’re gonna have him. He was hurt six games last year. Seriously. I remember signing a player for the highest paid at the position in the league and he got knocked out 2/3 of the year. Dak Prescott. So, there’s a lot of things you can think about. Just as the player does. When you’re thinking about committing and guaranteeing money,’” said Jerry Jones.
During training camp, Parsons stated he had not been practicing with teammates due to back issues, while also remaining away from field activities amid unresolved contract talks.
Following a recent preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Brian Schottenheimer provided an update on Parsons’ condition: “the most recent MRI of Parsons ‘came back pretty clean.’ This means that, if Micah doesn’t appear in the Week 1 game in Philadelphia, it will be purely as a pressure tactic to secure his new contract.”
The team continues to monitor both Parsons’ health status and contract situation ahead of their season opener.
