The Green Bay Packers have been linked to trade talks involving Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Micah Parsons as the new season nears and contract negotiations for Parsons remain unresolved. The three-time All-Pro has yet to secure a contract extension despite recent deals in the league increasing the market value for pass rushers.
Parsons, selected tenth overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been a standout defensive player over four seasons. His statistics include 256 total tackles, 63 tackles for loss, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, and one defensive touchdown. He is fifth in the league in sacks during this period.
Recently, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport called the Packers “the perfect trade destination” for Parsons if he is moved from Dallas. However, Cowboys insider Ed Werder expressed strong opposition to such a move, referencing Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Charles Haley’s trade from San Francisco to Dallas in the 1990s as a cautionary tale.
Werder stated: “Trading Micah Parsons would be idiotic. Trading him the the Packers might be the equivalent of the 49ers trading Charles Haley to the Cowboys’ 90s dynasty teams – at the expense of SF. Double dumb.”
Following Haley’s trade to Dallas, the Cowboys won three Super Bowl titles in four years, with San Francisco only winning one championship in that span and losing back-to-back NFC Championship Games to Dallas early on after Haley joined his new team. Haley eventually retired as a five-time Pro Bowler with more Super Bowl titles than any other player at his retirement; Tom Brady has since surpassed that record.
Some Packers supporters hope that acquiring Parsons could give their defense an advantage similar to what Dallas experienced following its trade for Haley. Last season, Green Bay’s defense recorded 45 sacks but had only one player—Rashan Gary—with more than five sacks.
As discussions continue and no deal has been reached with Parsons ahead of the season opener, teams across the league are watching closely to see if a blockbuster trade develops.
