Bobby Mitchell was born on June 6, 1935, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He grew up in the city and attended Langston High School. There, he played football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was skilled in several sports and had a chance to sign with a professional baseball team. Instead, he chose to play college football at the University of Illinois. His college career showed promise, especially as a halfback and defensive back.
Mitchell was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 1958. He played as a halfback and earned recognition for his performance. Later, in 1962, he became the first Black player to sign with the Washington Redskins. This helped the team integrate after years of segregation. Mitchell had a long NFL career, excelling as a runner, receiver, and return specialist. After retiring in 1968, he worked as an executive and scout for the Redskins for over 40 years. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983. His legacy is tied to both his hometown of Hot Springs and his impact on professional football. He passed away in 2020, remembered for his contributions on and off the field.
