Al Davis was born on July 4, 1929, in Brockton, Massachusetts. He grew up in Brockton before moving to New York at a young age. Davis attended Syracuse University, where he played football. After college, he began his coaching career in 1950, working with the Baltimore Colts and then at The Citadel. In 1960, Davis joined the Los Angeles Chargers as a wide receivers coach. He quickly moved up the ranks and became the head coach and general manager of the Oakland Raiders in 1963. Davis led the Raiders to three Super Bowl victories and became known for his aggressive approach to the game.

Davis was also instrumental in the AFL-NFL merger and briefly served as AFL commissioner in 1966. He returned to the Raiders as part owner and general manager, a position he held for many years. Davis made history as the first NFL owner to hire a Black head coach, a Latino head coach, and a female executive.

In 1992, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. Davis passed away on October 8, 2011, in Oakland, California. While his legacy is tied to his time in professional football, his roots in Brockton remain an important part of his story. His connection to the city where he was born continues to be commemorated.

Davis is known for the motto “Just Win, Baby” and his commitment to excellence.

Al Davis was involved in the NFL for 49 seasons during his Hall of Fame career as a team owner and commissioner.
