The Indianapolis Colts may have found a promising defensive player in JT Tuimoloau, drafted from Ohio State University to replace Dayo Odeyingbo, who left in free agency. Odeyingbo was instrumental in the Colts’ record-breaking sack season, achieving 16 sacks over three years. Tuimoloau’s potential has been highlighted by Fox Sports analyst Rob Rang, who compared him to franchise legend Dwight Freeney.
Rang noted that while Tuimoloau might not match Freeney’s explosiveness, his combination of length and strength allows him to overpower blockers and make crucial plays. “Neither seems likely to challenge Freeney’s seven seasons of 10-plus sacks over their respective careers,” Rang said, “but don’t be surprised if both emerge as longtime starters and fan favorites for their steady, tough play.”
Tuimoloau ended his final college season with 12.5 sacks and contributed significantly to Ohio State’s national championship win. His collegiate experience is expected to ease his transition into the NFL. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing over 265 pounds, he offers a complete skill set for the Colts.
Rang also discussed Laiatu Latu, the Colts’ 15th overall pick in 2024. In his rookie year, Latu achieved four sacks and 32 tackles despite limited playtime. With Lou Anarumo now leading the defense, Latu could see more opportunities in his second year.
Although surpassing Freeney’s achievements is challenging due to faster quarterback releases today, Tuimoloau’s speed and size pose a consistent threat. If Anarumo can craft effective strategies, the Colts’ pass rush could become formidable once again.
