With less than two weeks remaining before the Colorado Buffaloes open their season against Georgia Tech, the decision on who will start at quarterback is still pending. After Shedeur Sanders departed for the NFL, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinee Deion Sanders faces a choice between veteran transfer Kaidon Salter, formerly of Liberty, and freshman Julian “JuJu” Lewis.
Deion Sanders has not announced whether one quarterback will take all the snaps or if both candidates could share time in games. Following a recent practice, wide receiver Sincere Brown spoke about the team’s options: “Kaidon is very wise, very experienced. He can facilitate very well. Julian has a pure god given arm. From a talent stand point, they both got it.”
Another receiver who joined Colorado via transfer, Hykeem Williams, shared his perspective as well: “I know for sure JuJu,” Williams said. “He’s that.”
The program underwent major changes in its receiving corps during the offseason with Travis Hunter, LaJohntay Wester, Will Sheppard and Jimmy Horn Jr., last year’s top four receivers, all departing.
During Big 12 media days in July, Deion Sanders commented on both quarterbacks: “We definitely want to continue to develop JuJu (Lewis), but Kaidon is off the chain (…) He’s been there, done that and can get the job done. I wouldn’t have brought him here if I didn’t trust him (…) But JuJu is coming around the mountain when he comes, and I love him. I love what he brings to the table. I don’t know how it’s going to play out. As long as it plays out, we can’t lose either way, with either of those two.”
Pete Nakos from On3 weighed in on August 13 regarding the quarterback situation: “Salter is the more experienced of the two quarterbacks, playing in 30 career games,” Nakos wrote. “One source told On3 that they give the Liberty transfer the edge at this point to win the competition.” Nakos also noted that Lewis remains strongly considered and a platoon arrangement could see both quarterbacks playing during games.
As preparations continue for their season debut on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech, Colorado’s quarterback situation remains an ongoing topic with no definitive answer yet from Deion Sanders.
