Ohio State’s Caleb Downs is drawing comparisons to NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed according to draft analyst Todd McShay. Known for his defensive skills and presence on the field, Downs has impressed since his freshman year at Alabama and continued to excel after transferring to Ohio State in 2024.

McShay noted that Downs has “the best instincts and recognition skills of any defensive back I’ve evaluated since Ed Reed.” He clarified that while Downs and Reed don’t play the same role, Downs’ ability to read plays stands out. “Ed Reed was more of a deep half-ball guy; he played more like a receiver back there. But Downs, his instincts… that’s what stands out,” McShay said.

Downs’ versatility is evident as Ohio State has used him in various roles, including as a hybrid safety-linebacker. With key defenders from last year gone, Downs now faces the challenge of leading the defense without as much support. “He was the guy,” McShay said. “But now he’s got to be the guy without the support around him.”

In his college career so far, Downs has achieved significant stats: leading Alabama in tackles as a freshman with 107 total tackles and continuing strong performance at Ohio State with 81 tackles in 2024. Despite focusing on personal growth this season, Downs emphasizes team development: “I just hope to be seen as somebody that… if you ever need anything… you can ask him,” he told WBNS 10TV.

While it remains uncertain if Caleb Downs will reach Ed Reed’s level, his commitment to leadership and team success is clear as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Ed Reed’s illustrious career included 64 interceptions and 1,590 interception yards. The Baltimore Ravens drafted him with the 24th overall pick in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft.
